4NanoEARDRM M24 meeting took place virutally

Originally, meeting was planned to take place at University of Maastrich on 06-07.07.2020. Due to current COVID-19 situation, we held the meeting in a digital environment. We spent two days discussing the recent advances of the projects. Thanks to all our partners, INSTM - Italian Consortium on Materiel Science and Technology, MERLN Maastricht University, MyBiotech GmbH, Istanbul Arel University and Linari Engineering the meeting was as fruitful as a face-to-face meeting.

4NanoEARDRM German partners attended the National Review Meeting at Dresden

German partners MJR PharmJet GmbH und The Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) met the Dr. Stefan Pieper and Steffen Hey to review the project progress. The meeting was hosted by The Technische Universität Dresden. During the meeting, project progress was discussed and the work for the remaining project period was evaluated. The Review Meeting finished with a visit of the facilities of TUD, where the participants also had the chance to observe the characterization work done by TUD and attend a mini exercise to practice ear surgery on a 3D dummy model.

4th annual MERLN PhD symposium

Shivesh Anand, a PhD candidate involved in the 4NanoEARDRM project was awarded the second prize for poster presentation at the 4th MERLN annual PhD Symposium, held in Maastricht, Netherlands on December 6, 2019. Shivesh presented his work on the nano-biofabrication of human eardrum, where he highlighted the multi-scale manufacturing strategy by combining electrospinning with additive manufacturing.

JMMP 2020 Travel Award

Shivesh Anand, a PhD candidate working in the 4NanoEARDRM project at Maastricht University, Netherlands, has been granted the 2020 Travel Award sponsored by the Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing, MDPI. The award consists of 800 Swiss Francs to support his attendance at an academic conference related to the scientific fundamentals and engineering methodologies of manufacturing and materials processing.

Shivesh will be using this grant to fund his participation at the International Conference on Biofabrication, Wollongong, Australia, where he will be presenting our ongoing research on the reconstruction of human eardrum. We congratulate Shivesh on his achievement, and wish him all the very best with his adventures Down Under!

Our coordinator Dr Serena Danti University of Pisa – INSTM , and Dr. Carlos Mota from Maastricht University - MERLN joined the Euronanomed 3 - Review meeting Bratislava 2019, 28-29th May 2019. Review meeting offered a platform for seminars of funded projects in Joint Calls 2015, 2016 and 2017 and the Training Workshop on Responsible Research and Innovation. Dr. Carlos Mota was privileged to receive the 1st prize for Best Poster Award with the poster titled “Nano-biofabrication approaches towards manufacturing of human tympanic membrane” on behalf of 4NanoEARDRM team.

BIONAM 2019

Dr. Carlos Domingues Mota from Maastricht University - MERLN and Dr. Serena Danti from University of Pisa - INSTM presented 4NanoEARDRM project with oral presentations at BIONAM 2019 3rd International Conference on Bio and Nanomaterials, September 29 – October 3 , 2019 (https://www.bionam2019.unisa.it/). Bionam2019 attracted the scientists from all over the world

30th annual conference of the European Society for Biomaterials

30th annual conference of the European Society for Biomaterials was held together with the 26th annual conference of the German Society for Biomaterials (DGBM) from September 9 to 13 in Dresden. The ESB brought material and biotechnology science researchers, as well as clinicians and company representatives, from 41 countries together to provide a synergetic environment for stimulating knowledge exchange and discussions about the latest research topics. Our project partner ENT was represented in the meeting by Dipl.-Ing. Phlipp Kempert with an oral presentation titled "Validation of eardrum replacement scaffolds made from electrospinning". You can reach the presentation from this link.

Month-12 consortium meeting at AREL University

The 4NanoEARDRM consortium met for its Month-12 consortium meeting at AREL University in Istanbul, Turkey. During this meeting the achievements of the last 6 months were presented and discussed. A workshop on technology transfer was provided by TTO of AREL University as an integrated part of the meeting.

Innovation for Health conference, Rotterdam

Shivesh Anand, a PhD candidate represented the 4NanoEARDRM team at the Innovation for Health conference, organized at WTC Rotterdam (Netherlands) on February 14, 2019. Based on his poster presentation, he was chosen among the top 10 researchers competing for the prestigious Upcoming Scientist Award. In the final round of pitch presentations, Shivesh highlighted the ingenuity and social impact of our multi-scale biofabrication strategy for manufacturing human tympanic membrane.

3rd MERLN annual PhD Symposium

Shivesh Anand, a PhD candidate involved in the 4NanoEARDRM project was awarded the first prize for rapid-fire poster presentation at the 3rd MERLN annual PhD Symposium, held in Maastricht (Netherlands) on December 7, 2018. Shivesh presented his work on the nano-biofabrication approaches towards manufacturing of human tympanic membrane, where he highlighted the multi-scale fabrication strategy of combining electrospinning with additive manufacturing.

5th Biomaterial days Symposium

Ms. Burcu Gencer, a graduate student, attended the 5th Biomaterial Days Symposium, which took place at Yıldız Technical University from 22 to 23 October 2018. She presented a poster with the title “Synthesis and Characterization of Molecularly Imprinted Nano Structures for Controlled Drug Release”. She met scientists interested in biomaterials from different universities of Turkey. Therefore it was an excellent opportunity for her to exchange scientific ideas, to discuss interesting research topics and to make new collaborations.

World TERMIS Conferce, Kyoto

Serena Danti and Luisa Trombi attended the World TERMIS conference held in Kyoto from 4-7 September (during the typhoon!!) to represent the 4NanoEARDRM team. During the poster presentation several asian students and researchers came and asked questions. The idea of a multifucntional tympanic membrane scaffold was highly appreciated. In particular, the use of an instructive polymer, such as PEOT/PBT, able to reduce inflammatory cytokines and to stimulate innate immune response (via defensins) was considered a very interesting and potentially successful to fight chronic otitis media. By the way, it was quite unusual facing a typhoon and more than 3000 attandants had to reschedule their flights. Serena and Luisa flew through Korea and China, to be back safe in Europe after a 36 hour travel.
